This does to DIY with your relationship
It's double-edged. On one hand, I've found my calling (DIY team A you to Buurman & Buurman at your service) and on the other hand, it's also a bit disappointing.
Both in terms of time and money. I'll just be honest right away. It's really fun, a ‘grown-up house’, but I haven't had a normal weekend in six weeks and I actually feel like having one again. Just like having a normal plate of food. Not from an elastic, thin, plastic version. A steaming portion hanging in the lamps? That's no longer an option. We're tired. And busy. We have to run-jump-fly-dive-fall-get up and keep going. When will it be finished? We have no idea. The planning is falling apart, there are setbacks, leaks out of nowhere and despite the fact that we can still laugh reasonably about everything, we're also a bit fed up with it.
What DIY does to your relationship? Let me put it this way: in times of stress, you really get to know each other. One couple merges, the other is constantly bickering. So far, thank god, we are still in category 1. What it has done to our relationship so far?
I need a weekend away more than ever
He does too. Quality time. Sitting in a hot tub. Drinking champagne. Away from the paintbrushes, sanders, and putty knives.
We've missed all the nice weather and that made us a bit grumpy
Instead of being romantic on the terrace, we were romantically trying to fix that freaking leak in the crawl space. Final result? Didn't succeed. So we ordered fries. Which brings me immediately to the next point.
You come together
Because somehow that cheese soufflé sandwich tastes ten times better after a long day of hard work than that salad. (Some couples get thin together because they don't eat while DIYing. By the way, we're still looking for a way to end up in that category.)
You argue about silly things
Maybe at the hardware store. “Yeah, but you were supposed to call the buyer's agent?” “I still have to work!” “I feel like I have to do everything here alone!” “YES HELLO, AS IF I'M NOT DOING ANYTHING!”
A renovation equals seeing the best/worst sides of your loved one
How does he/she behave under stress? Is Mr./Ms. done within an hour while you can easily keep going for four hours straight? That can happen. Everyone has a different stress threshold and especially during times of moving/renovation, you find out how much patience and perseverance the other has. Not on the same page? The same applies here: talking is the keyword.
So, and soon really those updates from my new crib. Just a few more weeks. Maybe I'll plan a video like Cribs. First, let's deal with that damn leak. Stay tuned, my friends.
P.S.: Currently turning your house upside down? These are the things you learn during DIY. Breathe in, breathe out, cutie. It'll all be fine. Really!
