Caffeine gum is the latest trend

marion lotd

Skater Mark Tuitert has launched a chewing gum. For athletes to enhance their performance, but also pilots, students, and festival-goers would benefit from this First Energy Gum. The secret is a liquid filling of caffeine and vitamin B. Unlike coffee and sports drinks, this is absorbed not through your stomach, but directly through your mucous membranes. The promise: within ten minutes you are wide awake and that lasts for five hours.

Because I can no longer drink coffee due to stomach problems and occasionally could use an energy boost, I decided to try this wonder remedy in different situations. Here are my experiences:

Situation 1: the car ride

To be honest, I am not the best driver in the world. Some sharpness during long car rides would be very welcome. I take the gum just before I get in the car. It's a huge piece, the size of a Fruittella. It feels a bit like I’m a cow chewing cud. The taste is unusual, but strangely nice. Then, ten minutes later, it’s as if someone presses the ON button. I start chatting away to my daughter, who is sitting next to me. Honestly, I have never talked so much and so fast in my entire life. An hour later, my daughter gets out relieved. I can hardly remember how we drove. Too busy talking.

Situation 2: the birthday visit

So we were on our way to my mother who is celebrating her birthday. I thought we would be alone there, but her entire living room is full and looking at us. I want to flee on the spot, but I feel strangely calm. I sit down and have an incredibly empathetic conversation with the neighbor who has quilting as a hobby (by the way, really recommended if you’re looking for a hobby). On the way back, I again chatter away to my daughter's head.

Situation 3: dinner

I’m not hungry and still talking a lot. Chris has also tried First Energy Gum for the first time and says it reminds him of Stackers. These fat burners from the nineties are now illegal, but they made you both vacuum your entire house and eat nothing. He also talks a lot. Our kids are going crazy from us.

Situation 4: exercising

Two days later. I have an appointment with my physiotherapist to train. I take a First Energy Gum and get on the cross trainer. Normally I hate every minute on that thing and I only manage to last by alternating between visualizing myself in a bikini and promising chocolate. Now my body moves on its own. I don’t even think about it, but when I look at the screen, I see that twenty minutes have already passed. When I do strength training with Gijs afterwards, I feel a bit shaky. Cardio: YES, strength training: NO.

Situation 5: a party

I’m actually very tired, but I’ve agreed to go to a party. A friend and I take a First Energy Gum. A little later, I’m on the dance floor. Three hours later, I’m still there. The friend is feeling a bit nauseous. I feel great. Sleeping that night is a bit less. The next morning I’m exhausted. The temptation is great to take gum again at breakfast, but I don’t do it.

Conclusion: this stuff works so well that I’m surprised it’s legal. It feels like drugs. You get a kind of jittery energy, not exactly suitable if you have to sit all day. You can also get a bit shaky from it. On the site, I read that you should take a lower dosage then. I find First Energy Gum amazing if you want to lose a few kilos. First, you effortlessly do an hour of cardio and then as a bonus, you’re not hungry. This gum is also a suitable substitute for drugs if you’re going to a party. Okay, you don’t get that warm wacky feeling, but you hold up well on the dance floor.
