Cheers to Taiwan

At the moment when football supporters smash a historic fountain in Italy, I am ashamed to be Dutch. But most of the time I am proud. Today even more so, as I see that Taiwan has become the first country in Asia to legalize same-sex marriage. Did you know that we Dutch were the very first country in the wooooorld to do this back in 2001? Can you imagine being head over heels in love with someone, together for years, but not allowed to marry? Not being accepted? Not being legally recognized as a couple? Pfff. It's sad. But today is a celebration in Taiwan. I see photos of supporters crying and cheering in the pouring rain in front of the parliament building and think: yes, this is the direction we need to go. So today, Taiwan, we toast to you. Love conquers. Always.
