Diary of a model

Lily spends her days as a model, rushing from shoot to show and then to another casting. On Amayzine, she tells you everything about what her life is really like. Under a different name, of course, but that means she can share all the juicy details. This week: tips for when you fly alone.
Time for a vacation ‘with the girls’! Laughing and having fun together at the airport. There's always someone who suddenly can't find their ticket: stress! Or then two people need to go to the bathroom again. But oh my god, what a fun time you already have at Schiphol. The vacation has begun and the girls are ready.
But what do you do when you're sitting at the airport alone? Who do you call out to: ‘Oh, I can't wait to flaunt my new bikini!’ Believe me: the security staff really doesn't care that you bought a cute new polka dot dress just for this trip. So, what do you do? How do you entertain yourself at the airport?
The phone
What an invention, that phone. You can endlessly scroll through all kinds of social media. View (and create #flightmodeon) thousands of Stories, check the latest weather report, and look up pictures of all the Insta spots you want to visit.
In addition, you can of course chat with friends or for those of us who love to talk (like me), call and FaceTime with your favorites. Since you have reception everywhere, you're actually never really alone. I can often be found in a corner talking on the phone with my headphones on. And when I'm not on the phone, I play a game of sudoku or Solitaire for distraction.
See, buy, fly
There are also hundreds of tax-free shops you can visit. Sometimes I go into the bookstore, read the back of each book, and flip through some magazines, only to walk back out with a bottle of water. Because I always have a book with me and I'm definitely not going to carry another one.
But the electronics shops are also always fun to walk through. You can see the craziest new gadgets, and since my earbuds are always getting lost or breaking, I regularly buy new ones so I can call hands-free again.
Of course, we can't forget the cosmetic shops either. Testing all kinds of new creams and perfumes, only to walk out in a cloud of sweet scents that many fellow passengers will enjoy.
People watching
This is also one of my very favorite activities: watching other people. Because at the airport, you have a very diverse crowd. There are businesspeople who appear at the gate as efficiently and late as possible, there are groups of girlfriends (as described above) and groups of friends who shout loudly and give each other a high five every minute, there are families with children who are lugging around toys, bottles, sandwiches, air cushions, and so on. And then you have the solo frequent flyers who, like me, are buried in a book or phone and don't want to be approached, which is why they have headphones on their ears as a preventive measure.
Food and coffee
Finally, my favorite activity: finding the nicest little eatery or coffee spot to treat myself to a healthy salad and almond milk cappuccino (the latter is often hard to find). At most airports, I now know exactly where to go and I walk straight to my regular table in the corner at the back after security, to quietly enjoy my greens.
So you see: even when you travel all alone, there are still endless things to keep you entertained. And I haven't even mentioned the massage chairs, running people trying to catch their flight in a panic, and the handsome guy who sometimes suddenly waits at the same gate.
