Extremely dirty things you would rather not know

But because I'm not the worst, I'll break it down for you. Be warned: if you ever want to go to the bathroom in the airplane in your socks, travel by public transport without fear of melting, brush your teeth, or unsuspectingly drink a beer, I advise you to stop reading now.

1. There can be ten million (!) bacteria on your toothbrush. Usually, the culprit is flushing a toilet in the same room. The bacteria that are normally found in feces can linger in the air for quite a while and can be found up to six meters away. On a toothbrush, for example.

2. We should immediately talk about the splash radius of a toilet. With the lid open, germs fly around you, up to about two meters away.

3. Between the sheets, things are not very hygienic in the Netherlands either. One in fourteen Dutch people washes their bedding only once every six months or when it starts to smell slightly. This. Cannot. Be. True.

4. There are four hundred times more bacteria on your desk than on a toilet seat.

5. Did you take the train or bus this morning? One in four people in public transport has the infamous poop bacteria on their hands. Just so you know.

6. There are seven hundred different little creatures living in your mouth. Yes. Little creatures.

7. A person swallows an average of one and a half kilos of snot per day. *gulp

8. Cockroaches can survive a week without a head. This indeed fits perfectly into the category of ‘this is something we actually don't want to know’, yes.

9. It is said that veal is indistinguishable in taste and texture from human flesh. Eat them, huh?

10. Sometimes there is fish in your beer, correction: fish glue, which is made from fish bladders. Cheers.

11. Red eyes after a dive in the pool? Has absolutely nothing to do with chlorine, but just with the enormous urine content in the water.

12. Okay, here's a disgusting hippo fact; the males try to attract the females by spraying them with feces.

13. Maybe not really disgusting, but it still feels a bit unappetizing: a carton of milk from the supermarket can contain milk from more than a thousand different cows.

14. A pink cookie often gets its color from the use of crushed insects, a type of louse from South America to be precise. Yuck.

15. Oh, and those drops on the floor of the toilet in an airplane, that's not water.
