Meghan Markle is being attacked

Meghan Markle

Sunday evening it was time and the much-discussed documentary from 60 Minutes aired about Meghan Markle in which friends (that's a very broad term, I know by now) and enemies would say what was wrong with Meghan Markle.

I watched the twenty minutes you can see without becoming a subscriber to the 60 Minutes channel. I was afraid beforehand that my – beautiful – image of Meghan would be disturbed, as I didn't want the image I have of her to be taken away from me. I can tell you that this is not the case.

I didn't hear anything really new. We hear Andrew Morton (you know, Diana's biographer), who is actually very complimentary about Meghan and sees a pattern with British married princesses. They are first celebrated and a year later vilified. Diana was called a fairy tale princess and a year later a dangerous intriguer. Sarah Ferguson was that spontaneous girl who rode horses in the woods and a year later became Freebee Fergie. So it’s more about the people (and the press) than about Meghan.

A few things that Meghan could have done better according to the speakers in the program:

– Renovating their house for £2.4 million of taxpayer money didn't go down well.

– Being vocal about climate change and taking four flights in a private jet (also to Nice to visit Elton John) may not have been very wise. Although it is said that the plane was ‘carbon neutral’.

– At Wimbledon, Meghan allegedly behaved like a VIP and not like a princess. People were not allowed to take photos of her and could not sit with her.

As I said: I didn't hear anything really new. And the above may not have been very wise, but it doesn't seem to me to be a crime against humanity nor harmful to Great Britain. More like a young woman in a new world trying to find a platform to bring her ideas to light and sometimes not fully aware of the protocol.

Is there anything Meghan can do to bring back the sparkle of Markle was the question. And would she succeed in following in the footsteps of her late mother-in-law Lady Diana?

Do less, was the simple answer from the ‘experts’ and not always wanting to take the main stage. ‘Meghan is married to Prince Harry who is sixth in line to the throne. Constitutionally totally irrelevant.’ Wokeee. ‘Ultimately it will be Queen Catherine and Meghan will always have to bow to her.’ Figuratively, but also literally.

But asking an independent, successful woman who is used to being on the main stage to muzzle herself and stay in the background seems to me quite a task.

Although I can imagine that after all the front pages of the past weeks and this documentary as a dessert, Meghan has ‘leave me alone’ high on her priority list.

Meanwhile, I hope that the British people (or at least these program makers) realize that it’s not that bad with Meghan. Come on, give the girl a break. She's just doing her best.
