Prevent a hangover, drink vodka

Because your 2019 was probably just as busy as ours and you might have missed that one nice article: this is one of our top scorers of this year. To enjoy reading it again with hot chocolate and cookies or with truffle chips and wine.

Our neighbors from FavorFlav.com deliver non-stop the finest recipes, know where to eat and especially what. But they also know a thing or two when it comes to alcoholic beverages. Today: why it's a great idea to look deeply into a glass of vodka tonight.

Strong drinks are in a small glass, lighter drinks in a larger glass, so your hangover only depends on the number of glasses you consume, not on the type of drink you drink. Sounds logical, right? Unfortunately, it's not true.

One drink does indeed give you a bigger hangover than another, even if you drink less of it. The rule of thumb? The darker the alcohol, the bigger the hangover.

Due to the fermentation process, chemical substances are created: congeners. These substances give dark drinks like red wine, cognac, and whiskey their typical flavors, but they are also responsible for nasty hangovers.

Experiment

How big is that difference? Quite big. In 1970, this was proven with a scientific experiment. Test subjects were made drunk with whiskey or vodka. Of the whiskey drinkers, 33% had a severe hangover, while only 3% of the vodka drinkers did. Quite a difference.

From this, the following ranking was distilled (ha!): cognac, red wine, rum, whiskey, white wine, gin, vodka, and pure alcohol.

Vodka soda

The ideal drink would be a vodka soda. Just make sure to choose quality vodka like Grey Goose or Belvedere. They have undergone a more intense filtering process than their cheaper counterparts.

If you’re thinking: ‘Great! Gin and tonic is just as clear, so bring on that IV drip’, then I have bad news for you: sugar also gives you big hangovers. Cherry is therefore also ‘more dangerous’ than you might think. And did we already mention bubbles? Unfortunately, those are also silent killers.

Solution

By the way, it varies by individual how many drinks are needed for a hangover. But on average, a woman weighing 60 kilos gets a hangover after three to five drinks, while a man weighing 80 kilos only after five or six. The safest solution: don’t drink alcohol. Guaranteed success, at least, the next morning.
