Really: Zeeland is the place of culinary hotspots and here's why

images of restaurant in Zeeland with beautiful and sleek interior

Here on the coast, the Zeeland coast. There we fill our bellies with culinary delights. Okay, Bløf may have sung it a bit differently, but that doesn't make it any less true. Born and raised in Amsterdam, I have relatively little to complain about in terms of hotspots, but that's also the pitfall. Short-sighted as I am, I automatically assume that Amsterdam is the culinary place of the Netherlands. Well, it turns out: that's not true at all. All this time I should have just been in Zeeland. There are so many Michelin restaurants for an extensive evening dining in style, but there are also various hotspots that are a bit more casual and ideal for a quicker bite. Anyway, foodies: Zeeland is where you need to be. And actually, you should just stay a bit longer for a few days. A stay in Zeeland is always a good idea.

The absolute culinary highlights in Zeeland

Vista.

Also awarded a Michelin star in its beautiful setting. Overlooking the water, on a dike: ultimate peace and just enjoy. Yes, yes, officially it's North Brabant, but it really is on the way to Zeeland, I think, and with such a view, this spot just belongs on the list. They also have two suites in the old fortress of the city where you can stay overnight if you want to make your outing completely complete. If you don't have plans for Christmas yet and want to indulge: the Christmas menu is to die for here.

Havenhoofd 2, Willemstad

De Kromme Watergang.

A bit of a shot for an open goal, because this is perhaps the most famous culinary hotspot in Zeeland. But well, that's also justified. Two Michelin stars, so it won't surprise you that every dish is truly a work of art. Almost a shame to eat. Almost yes, because you don't want to miss these flavors. So, so delicious.

Slijkplaat 6, Hoofdplaat

Inter Scaldes.

Wow, wow, wow. From two to one and with a leap forward back to three. Yes, this restaurant has three Michelin stars. Truly an experience to have lunch or dinner here. At Inter Scaldes, you can also stay overnight in their five-star hotel; for the ultimate experience, you should definitely do that. Very luxurious, very beautiful, and above all, very, very special delicious.

Zandweg 2, Kruiningen

Pure C.

Okay, it’s getting a bit monotonous, but well: this restaurant also has two Michelin stars. I don't know, but Zeeland must be the most densely populated region in Europe. The chef is Syrco Bakker, who was previously sous-chef at Oud Sluis of Sergio Herman. You understand: a trip to Zeeland takes several days. Testing all these Michelin restaurants, it’s a tough job, but someone’s got to do it.

Boulevard de Wielingen 47, Cadzand

Spetters.

If I just look at the name, I wouldn't expect it, but yes, yes: this spot is also the proud owner of a Michelin star. It’s located in the harbor, so the view is also good. If you want to keep an eye on your budget, go to Eb&Food, which is the covered terrace next door. Also very tasty and a bit more affordable.

The culinary highlights in Zeeland for every budget

Kaffee ’t Hof.

For when you feel like just good food and not too much fuss. Kaffee ’t Hof is a café where you can have a well-filled plate for very reasonable prices. A beer or house wine on the side, nothing more to do. Especially if you are a meat lover: burgers, spare ribs, MEAT. Delicious. There are also regular evenings with live music.

Vlasmarkt 20, Middelburg

Silvy’s Gusti e Sapori.

This establishment in Middelburg has two locations: one for delicious wood-fired pizzas and a trattoria with many different types of fresh pasta. The menus are inspired by Sardinia, so the spaghetti according to Sardinian recipe is one of the many recommendations.

Lange Noordstraat 6, Middelburg (pizzeria)

Stationsstraat 24, Middelburg (trattoria)

De Juf.

Originally a shop where homemade cakes, cookies, and other sweets were sold, it has now become a concept that is much more. You sit here top-notch, but nowadays they also serve the tastiest sandwiches. The place in Middelburg for breakfast and/or lunch.

Damplein 20, Middelburg

De Soepbar.

I love soup, so this spot is completely for me. Every day three fresh soups, such as zucchini soup with broccoli or vegan carrot soup. If you’re not such a soup lover, no worries: they also have fresh salads, sandwiches, and breakfast like (soy) yogurt or an acai bowl.

Nieuwendijk 52, Vlissingen

De Visbar.

Fresh fish, that's what it's all about here, but you probably thought that when you read the name. All fish is ‘displayed’ in the showcases, so you can see which one ends up on your plate. If you really don't like fish at all, they have also thought of you, because there are a number of meat and veggie dishes. Delicious: they also serve sushi.
