Seeing friends on vacation
Going on vacation with friends doesn't exactly seem like heaven to me. You're an early riser, they sleep the day away. Their kids suddenly turn out to be quite annoying (they think yours are too) and hey, are they seriously going to complain about who pays for the cleaning costs? I can imagine it can go like that and because my posse doesn't exactly score a ten when it comes to the ideal travel company (we're constantly with the laptop open and my oldest daughter is autistic. Sien van Sellingen is really a nice series, but if you have to listen to it seventeen times a day, I can understand that you get color differences from irritation in certain places on your body). Anyway. Long intro as to why we don't quickly go on vacation with friends. going on a trip. But meeting friends goes on vacation., I find even more enjoyable than going through the Hermès boutique with an unlimited budget and here's why.
1. You create a memory
Eating together in the city where you live is nice, but here in a foreign country is special. You all know that you will never forget this evening.
2. You see each other like you've never seen each other before
Usually, a lunch ends with a dive into the sea or the evening starts with an aperitif at your cottage with a pool. Swimming together creates a bond.
3. You see each other's children
We had the company of S, a dear work friend, for two days. In the Netherlands, we would always meet without kids, but now he got our family as a gift. Sometimes less comfortable, but extra intimate.
4. You get to know each other so much better
In the Netherlands, you eat together, now you spend a long, lazy beach day. You tell everything down to the last detail. For example, I know from friend S that he was in the sea scouts and is particularly good at tying knots. I quote: ‘A good knot is one that can also be untied.’ I think that should be on a tile.
5. You can share your love for the region
Or your irritation, but we didn't have that, because Puglia is heaven in Italy.
6. Layers fall away
You see each other in swimwear. Wet hair, smudged mascara, your scar, your little belly. And suddenly you're lying next to each other sleeping.
There's only one downside. You really miss each other when the day is over. Next year again.
