The 10 golden oldie movies you want to see this Christmas

Christmas is of course all about food, drink, friends, family, and coziness. And movies. Yes, sorry, but I really think so. You need to take a break from all that food and all those people every now and then, retreat for a bit, and watch mindless TV. Personally, I can do that mindless watching best when I don't have to think about a movie, so that's especially when I've seen it before. Watching movies multiple times is no problem for me at all. Especially the classics. And those classics are often repeated around Christmas time. Yes, you can feel it coming: I'm going to recommend the best classics among Christmas movies, so start planning a golden oldie movie marathon.
Home Alone
Well, how could I start with any other film? The Christmas movie of Christmas movies. Which — SHAME — is not being shown on TV during Christmas for the first time this year. Ridiculous if you ask me. It's also not available on Netflix or Videoland, also ridiculous, but luckily there's Pathé Thuis. Part 1 is available there, but also parts 2 through 4 and even a Home Alone.
Dogs
Never heard of it but it's definitely going on the watch list.
Eleven
Convenient, this one is just on Netflix and is fun for young and old. So if you want to watch one with the whole family, this is a good choice. With Will Ferrell in the lead role and a small role for Zoeey Deschanel. Sometimes very silly, but definitely when you want to experience that mindless aspect, I always find this a suitable option.
Die Hard
Huh? What? Yes, really. About thirty years ago this dilemma started — whether Die Hard is a Christmas movie or not — and for the past two years we have an answer. The events in this movie with Bruce Willis take place on Christmas Eve (evidence A), and the screenwriter himself said in 2017 that yes, Die Hard is indeed a Christmas movie. Evidence B, case closed.
Harry Potter (marathon, yes yes)
Not necessarily because there are so many Christmas elements in it, but I really associate Harry Potter with the holidays. And not just one part of it, that should be clear. No, you watch at least two Harry Potter movies. And let Netflix just have sent out a mysterious tweet recently confirming the arrival of Harry and his buddies. As a Christmas gift? Could very well be.
Bridget Jones’ Diary (also marathon)
Yes, Bridget Jones is now considered a classic, right? At least the first one, which — let's be honest — remains the best. I'm definitely Team Darcy, but Hugh Grant is also so charming in this. It doesn't happen often that I laugh harder at funny movies than just letting a bit more air out of my nose (you know what I mean), but with this one I really had to laugh out loud. And still do, by the way.
Everything Is Love
Still one of the best Dutch films out there, I think. Yes, Costa! and Full Moon are of course huge classics, but mainly because they are so bad. Everything Is Love was genuinely a funny and refreshing film. Refreshing in terms of the jokes and the good acting. Not the concept, no, we already knew that from Love Actually and yes, you can find that in our list too.
The Sound Of Music
I'm not sure if this is the case for everyone, but I always watched this movie around the holidays. And of course, singing along with the family. Yes, we transformed into the off-key singing Von Trapp family. Actually, I find everything with Julie Andrews suitable for Christmas, by the way, because Mary Poppins could also easily fit in this list and The Princess Diaries can actually be watched anytime.
No Christmas without Love Actually. And it's already 16 years old (I didn't expect that), which means I've spent 16 Christmases with Liam Neeson and Keira Knightley, and 16 times double with Hugh Grant and Colin Firth (see Bridget Jones). Furthermore, this movie doesn't need any more explanation as far as I'm concerned. Love Actually = Christmas, Christmas, Christmas.
The Holiday
Fun: Jack Black (who plays one of the lead roles) was recently asked on the red carpet about his favorite Christmas movie. He answered Elf (see number 2), to which the interviewer asked if it wasn't his own. ‘Huh? Do I have a Christmas movie?’ He had forgotten about The Holiday. How then. How can you forget whether you starred with the hottest man Jude Law in a movie? Or the hottest women Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet? I don't get it.
It’s A Wonderful Life
We conclude with the goldiest oldiest of all, namely this film from 1946, so you have the choice to see it in black and white or in color. It still ranks number 1 on the list of the American Film Institute, called 100 Greatest American Films Of All Time. Not just a good Christmas movie, but in general a top film.
