The curtains opened and there it was: an etching by Rembrandt and his Saskia. No larger than eleven by ten centimeters, but I approached it somewhat cautiously, almost reverently. Outside the museum, I had never been so close to a Rembrandt van Rijn before.
The story of Rembrandt and Saskia gives the etching color. She married him, even though he was beneath her station, and after four miscarriages, she bore him a son. Saskia was Rembrandt's great love, but he had to miss her far too young as she died at the age of thirty due to complications from childbirth. The self-portrait thus gains even more weight, as this is the only likeness of Rembrandt and Saskia together. The art historian from the Rijksmuseum spoke about his life before, with, and after Saskia, art dealer Douwes about the technique and how exceptionally clever it was that he could create the etching by candlelight with such depth. And I decided immediately to become a great art lover.
Designer Outlet Roermond has the philosophy that exclusivity can be accessible to all of us, in clothing, but also in art, and that’s why you can win a Rembrandt. Yes, you read that right: win. They honor Rembrandt in his year and you can see ‘Self-Portrait with Saskia’ in Roermond until September. What do you need to do to make Rembrandt yours? Just share what love means to you, submit it online, but I would just go record it myself in Roermond (you immediately have a good excuse to shop for a day). On July 15, you'll hear if ‘Self-Portrait with Saskia’ is yours. Imagine, imagine: a Rembrandt in your home.
