Did you know that we consume a staggering 28 sugar cubes a day in total? That's 40 kilos of sugar per year. While the World Health Organization advises a maximum of 12.5 sugar cubes (women) or 15 sugar cubes (men) of free sugars daily, we are consuming about 30% too much every day. Children are even consuming nearly 80% too much, according to the latest figures from the RIVM. It's no wonder that the Diabetes Fund wants to make us, the sugar-chewing beings, aware of this and help us critically look at and assess the products we already have at home and bring into our homes week after week.

And guess what? Over 77% of the sugar we consume daily is the fault of our fridge and kitchen cabinets. So to combat most sugars, it's primarily at home where changes can be made. And precisely for this reason, the Diabetes Fund and Philips are working extra hard this week for fewer ‘home sugars’ with the ‘How sweet is your fridge?’ campaign. The idea of this campaign is to challenge each other to critically look at the contents of your fridge and kitchen cabinets, where the Diabetes Fund helps you here step by step to reduce sugar in the kitchen, while also providing healthy (and especially tasty) alternatives. And now you can probably see it coming: to be very honest, how many sugar cubes do you count in your cabinets?
