5 important things you can do against racism

Every time I read, see, or hear something, I become more aware of the white privileges I grew up with and that I have. But how can you start contributing to the Black Lives Matter movement?

1. Address people on thoughtless comments or posts on social media
In all honesty, I am disappointed in some people I know. This week, someone posted a narrative about Zwarte Piet and the protests on Facebook, and I was stunned by such ignorance. Do you see this happening too? Address people on this behavior, even if it doesn't make you friends. It doesn't have to. Do this also when it comes to the protests and explain why they are so important.

2. Watch the Black Lives Matter collection on Netflix
Netflix is launching a new genre this week, where relevant and important documentaries, series, and films are gathered for Black Lives Matter. Educate yourself is one of the most important things to do. Follow, read, watch, and listen.

3. Correct yourself time and again
Because even if you try to do it right, if you have white privileges you will hold onto them forever. Don't argue with people who know what it's like to live with racism, but correct yourself and listen. Look around you in the workplace, in your social life, everywhere. What needs to change and what can you contribute to that?

4. Go beyond the discomfort
It may feel a bit uncomfortable to truly face inequality, but if that's the worst of it, then it's nothing. Remember that.

5. Don't settle for jokes
Jokes are the foundation of a feeling, of prejudices, and of inequality. It's not funny, and it has never been a laughing matter.
