Hema wine bag
Wine cooler bag, €12.50 Hema

Say wine, snacks or haute cuisine and the foodies of online food magazine FavorFlav know where to drink, how to eat and what to cook. This time our chefs serve you: the Hema wine bag.

Hema knows how to make us happy. A wine cooler bag. Say what? A cooler bag that allows you to transport and keep bag-in-box wine cool. And: you can pour wine straight from it. Picnicking just got a lot more fun.

Bag-in-box-in-bag
Of course, wine in a bottle is much fancier than a cardboard box with a tap, but a bag-in-box is super handy. Because: you can slide it right into your fridge and pour away, and you can easily take such a wine box with you. Like in this cool backpack, for example.

Why a BiB is great
It's strange that you see the bag-in-box, also known as BiB, so relatively little in the Netherlands, because in countries like France and Australia, every fridge is full of it. In fact: in Scandinavia, many fridges are standardly equipped with a wider door so that the BiB fits in. Such a cardboard package containing a vacuum-sealed plastic bag is, for more than the reasons mentioned above, really great. The contents vary per BiB, but usually hover around two to three liters. Because the wine is packaged in such a way that no oxygen can reach it when you tap the wine, the wine in a BiB stays good much longer after opening than in a bottle.

Cheaper than bottled wine
A bag-in-box is also about 30 percent cheaper than wine in a bottle, weighs much less than the same number of liters in bottles, and you don't have to take it to the glass recycling bin (which can sometimes be quite embarrassing for us... Recognizable, or are we the only ones who have turned into heavy drinkers during this corona quarantine?)

And also not unimportant: during the production and transport of packaged and bagged wine, more than eight times less CO2 is emitted than with bottled wine. Why the BiB is not yet wildly popular in the Netherlands? Probably because it looks a bit cheap, leading the average consumer to think that it must be low quality. But qualitatively, wine packaged in a BiB does not have to be inferior to the same wine from a bottle. Just like with screw caps, the BiB has also been looked down upon for a long time due to the association with cheap low-quality wine. But the savvy drinker knows better: the BiB is nothing less than a very smart solution. Especially when you throw such a cheerful bag around it.

Want?
The Hema wine cooler bag costs €13 and has a zipper at the bottom that allows you to pull out the tap from the wine box. Pouring wine becomes a piece of cake and your wine stays cool the whole time. The cooler bag closes at the top with a Velcro and click closure and has adjustable shoulder straps.
