Edition 2020: the nicest terraces in NL

The sun is shining, the weather is sweeeeet. And even more importantly: it is allowed again. We can go back to the terrace and from July 1st, the measures will be further relaxed. That vacation abroad is not in the cards for me just yet, but that's perfectly fine — I'm also having a great time in the Netherlands. Now I feel like I've explored all the beautiful terraces in Amsterdam, so I've started to look into the most beautiful terraces in the whole of the Netherlands. And even though we have a small country, the views are no less stunning. So here’s a bucket list of the best terraces in the Netherlands where you want to chill with your butt.
The 10 most beautiful terraces in the Netherlands
1. Garnwerd aan Zee
Hunzeweg 38, Garnwerd
The village of Garnwerd, I had never heard of it before. It’s quite a small village, so that’s not too strange, but if you’re near Groningen: stop by here. You’re sitting so nicely by the water and you really get a vacation feeling.
2. ’t Gerecht
Gemeenteplein 33, Heerenveen
We stay a bit in the far North, because you can find this spot in Heerenveen. Declared the best terrace in the Netherlands by Misset Horeca in 2018, so the expectations are quite high. They fully live up to that here, because you really get that vacation-at-home feeling.
3. Barbarossa
Zwarte Pad 61, Scheveningen
Since I was born in Amsterdam, I quickly feel relaxed when I’m at the beach. But I’m also very happy when I’m in a city, because I miss that urban hustle and bustle quickly. Solution: The Hague and Scheveningen. I think this is the best destination for a day or weekend away. And then a day at Barbarossa is definitely a must.
4. George Marina
Spaklerweg 10, Amsterdam
And when I want a bit of peace in Amsterdam, I often go to this terrace. Seafood lovers are definitely in their element here, but even just for a drink on the terrace, this is already a recommendation. Such a nice view, overlooking the boats and surrounded by tranquility. Except for the noise from the guests, of course.
5. Het IJsselpaviljoen
IJsselkade 1, Zutphen
Not really a hotspot in terms of trendiness, but a very beautiful place to sit by the water. A nice no-nonsense spot, with good food for a nice price. Be sure to catch the sunset here because it’s really amazing.
6. Window 33
Eerste van der Helststraat 42, Amsterdam
My all-time favorite spot in Amsterdam. Right in the Pijp and with an un-Amsterdam-sized terrace, with shade and sun and the best Moscow Mules and a house beer on tap in collaboration with Brewery ’t IJ. Super friendly service and delicious food, so it’s no surprise that I’ve been a regular since the opening.
7. Mooiriver
Oude Oever 10, Dalfsen
An idyllic spot near Zwolle, in Dalfsen. It’s also a hotel, so if you really want to treat yourself, you can stay overnight. It’s also very handy in terms of being the designated driver, of course. You have a beautiful view over the Vecht and they serve exceptionally good food. Treat yourself and go here.
8. Buitenplaats Plantage
Vogelenzangseweg 49
Near Zwaanshoek and Heemstede, you’ll find the small village of Vogelenzang and there you’ll find this spot with a gigantic terrace. A lot of attention to organic and sustainable food. It’s really nice to make a day out of it and add a walk and/or bike ride, because the surroundings are super beautiful.
9. AIRrepublic
Maritiem Plaza 1, Cadzand
And all the way down, just before the border with Belgium, you have the place Cadzand and there you have AIRrepublic and that’s where you want to go. By the beach, with so much delicious fresh fish and cold wine or a beer. Ultimate feeling of happiness here.
10. Buitenplaats Slangevegt
Straatweg 40, Breukelen
Not on the coast, in fact: I didn’t really expect a nice spot here. It’s in Breukelen (sorry, Breukelen) and I don’t immediately associate that place with a hotspot. But it is there and that is Buitenplaats Slangevegt. I get a very village-like feeling here and I love that. Once settled on the terrace here, I don’t want to go anywhere else.
