Hack: steaming dumplings without a steamer

Say wine, snacks or haute cuisine and the food lovers of online food magazine FavorFlav know where to drink, how to eat and what to cook. This time our chefs serve you: the trick to steam dumplings without a steamer.

Earlier we already praised the steam basket trumpet because wow, what a handy thing to have in your kitchen cupboard, but what if you find yourself somewhere without a steam basket and you feel the uncontrollable urge to steam a bag of dumplings? Not in your own home of course because you have one by now, but somewhere you still want to dim sum and where only some ‘regular’ kitchen stuff is available; a holiday cottage or something. No problem!

A metal steamer is of course also an ideal alternative (just make sure to place a piece of baking paper in the steamer or lightly grease it) but let's assume for now that you have neither available.

Aluminum foil
The tip: make a few (let's say three) large balls/balls from pieces of aluminum foil. They need to be big enough to hold a plate a few centimeters above the bottom of a pot. Place them at the bottom of the pot, pour water in until halfway up the balls, and position them so that you can lay a plate flat on top. The plate should be slightly smaller than the circumference of the pot, so that the steam can circulate inside. Now cover the plate completely with a round piece of baking paper or just grease it with a few drops of oil, place the food on top, close the lid, and you're ready to steam.

So bring on those rendang dumplings, or whatever you feel like steaming!
