How can you be like Ghislaine Maxwell?

After recovering from Unorthodox, I clicked on Filthy Rich, the Netflix documentary about Jeffrey Epstein. Although I knew what the man had been up to, it was disillusioning to see his modus operandi. Vulnerable, underage girls recruited other vulnerable underage girls. Just as constant as the stream of young girls was and the 200 dollars that were standardly ready as thanks for the ‘massage’, so constant was the presence of Ghislaine Maxwell at Epstein's side. First as his lover, later as ‘lady of the house’, ‘business associate’, and ‘aggressive assistant’. A portrait of the woman who facilitated all this suffering and the only one who is the source of what has all transpired in Epstein's million-dollar villas. Because ever since watching the doc, I can only wonder: how do you become like that?

It didn't start well
Two days after Ghislaine's birth, her brother fell into a coma as a result of a car accident. That coma lasted six years, then he died. It had a significant impact on her mother and the family and was the cause of the anorexia that developed in Ghislaine.

Born rich
Ghislaine's father had a large media company and the family lived in a villa with 53 rooms. There was money like water, and Ghislaine's father, Robert Maxwell, bought a yacht, Lady Ghislaine, where Ghislaine spent a large part of the 1980s. Ghislaine did many jobs for her father and even once traveled to New York with an envelope of cash to bribe someone. Her father also turned out to be not entirely legitimate, as after his death (he suddenly drowned next to his yacht, Ghislaine thought of murder but that was never proven) it turned out that he had squandered all the pension money of his employees amounting to £440 million. When his sons were held responsible for paying this back, Ghislaine flew to New York on a Concorde to quickly push through to the highest echelon of New York society.

Society lady
In New York, it was Bill Clinton on the left and Prince Andrew on the right for Ghislaine. She also met Jeffrey Epstein there, whom she would later call her ‘soulmate’. First, they were seen as lovers at many society parties in New York, and later she worked for Epstein. Women who also accuse her and say they were assaulted by Epstein and her, she allegedly threatened to ruin their careers and lives.

Out of sight
After Epstein spent 18 months in prison for prostitution with minors in 2008, they were no longer seen together. Since 2016, Ghislaine has not been seen at any society party, and rumors say she is being kept out of sight by influential men (Trump?) because she is a reservoir of information.

I am now so fascinated by a woman who recruited so many girls, allegedly assaulted, and could continue to work for this monster that I wanted to see her move. She once founded a foundation, The TerraMar Project, to help clean the oceans and gave a TED Talk about it. I mainly saw a fearful look. A woman who is desperately trying to hold her ground and goes through life with a bucket of soapy water to keep her sidewalk clean.

She has not had a permanent address for years and will continue to flee from her actions.
