Something to think about before you buy

Lotte van Scherpenzeel

The sale and I, it's a kind of match made in heaven. Around the discount period, I receive wishlists from friends, family, and colleagues because I'm so good at finding that nice price for that one cute sweater. My shopping carts are full and I can't wait for Black Friday to finally hit the ‘order’ button. Until I woke up on Monday morning with an email from Filippa K with the subject: ‘A letter from us to you’. They are not participating in these actions and explain why: ‘The fashion industry ranks high on the list of the most polluting sectors in the world.’ Wow, that's quite a statement. But it's true: those discounts encourage everyone to buy more while we don't necessarily need it. Because what is actually in my shopping cart that I really need? ‘Think better about what you buy and invest in items that last a long time.’ I completely agree with that. Last year, The Ordinary already made this statement and now my favorite brand Filippa K is doing it, but it doesn't stop there. More and more labels are giving a counter-sound this year, like Coco Bonito. They are introducing BlackOUT Friday and instead of giving 30% off, they are donating 30% of the revenue to a good cause. It is now more important than ever to support those vulnerable groups who have been hit harder by corona. It is an eye-opener for me and I will first clean out my closet before adding anything new.
