The I-drink-too-much-in-quarantine checklist

drinking red wine toasting with friends

Research shows that we are drinking 24 liters less wine per person this year due to the corona crisis. With messages like this, I worry about myself, because they probably haven't studied me. I select supermarket wine as if I am at a fancy liquor store and in my surroundings, people are stocking up in boxes (yes, plural) at the Sligro.

By the way, did you know that South Africa has an alcohol ban? Alcohol blurs boundaries and thus also the meters of distance you need to keep from others to prevent spreading. I can relate, because I also tend to get clingy after consumption.

My rule of thumb is normally that I drink little to nothing during the week and actually never alone. It does get a bit out of hand during isolation. In quarantine, I find myself sitting outside on the sidewalk at the end of the day, to see if my boyfriend is almost home, because: just a little glass to toast together. Okay, that's of course disproportionately exaggerated, but having a glass to wrap up the day and usher in the evening is not strange to us nowadays.

Cause for concern? According to experts, no. They tell HuffPost that one or two glasses a day can’t hurt, just don’t let Trimbos hear it because they strictly stick to one consumption.

On March 11, CBS published a study showing that fewer and fewer people are drinking (daily). Good news of course, but I do suggest that CBS conducts another study, but then starting from March 13, 2020. The day our intelligent lockdown began. I suspect that the percentage of people who enjoy a little glass per day has indeed increased somewhat.

If you recognize the following points, experts do advise you to pay attention to your alcohol intake by the way:

  • Drinking because you are stressed
  • Drinking out of boredom
  • Drinking while you work
  • Worrying whether you have enough alcohol at home
  • Not being able to meet obligations due to alcohol
  • Not feeling mentally okay
  • Having withdrawal symptoms when you don’t drink
  • You want to stop drinking, but you can’t

Nothing wrong with enjoying in quarantine, but not with your mates and in moderation.
