The series you want to start this week on Netflix

Who would have thought that in 2020 we would be watching series from all over the world en masse. Ten years ago, I was just watching American series with the occasional foray into British sitcoms. Dutch series were still mostly quite bad back then. How we’ve changed. Nowadays, we can even make fun, exciting, and funny series in our little frog country, and American series have been displaced by Spanish-language binge series.

And now Italy is getting involved too, as they are releasing a new drama series on Netflix. The day after tomorrow it will be online, on Wednesday that is. It will be called Summertime, which of course sounds anything but Italian, but it really is. A drama series with a romantic touch, and also with very beautiful views. Summertime takes place on the Adriatic coast in the heart of summer. That is something we can only dream of for now, so a series that makes you feel a bit like you’re on vacation is definitely welcome.

Five young people are celebrating their vacation at the Adriatic coast (jealous). Not just any vacation, by the way, but a vacation of three months (JEALOUS). Summer, Ale, Dario, Edo, and Sofia are going to spend time there together to have a good time and learn more about themselves and love. I find it striking that the series is called Summertime and there is also a character named Summer, and it turns out that is no coincidence: she is indeed the character around whom everything revolves.

The trailer looks sunny, there is a lot of partying, and I believe it is a nice coming-of-age drama. A bit like The Edge Of Seventeen, which made me cry really hard. Now, during these quarantine times, I have become quite emotionally unstable, so that will not be any different with this series. Just seeing those vacationing people, at the beach, on air mattresses... The floodgates are already breaking.

Anyway, it’s really a great series for when you want to daydream a bit. And I don’t know about you, but I am absolutely ready for that. Bella Italia, I’m coming to you. From my little bench, that is. But I will definitely order a pizza for the ultimate feeling.
