The tastiest 5 wines from the supermarket under 5 euros

Say wine, snacks or haute cuisine and the gourmands of online food magazine FavorFlav know where to drink, how to eat it and what to cook. This time our chefs serve you the recipe for the tastiest wine.
Almost 90 percent of all wine we drink at home is bought in the supermarket or at one of the liquor store chains. Some locations have up to 800 (!) different wines to choose from. And since you can't taste them all yourself, wine journalists Harold Hamersma and Esmee Langereis do that for you. From pricier to damn tasty liters for little. We asked Esmee which supermarket bargains you can safely bring home. They cost you less than 5 euros and an additional advantage: they are liter bottles, so count your profit.
Top for (almost) nothing
You really love wine a lot. Or you're a bit tight on cash. Or both. Then it can happen that you suddenly find yourself squatting in the supermarket at the bottom wine shelf – the domain of the bargain bottles and liter knockouts. Nothing to be ashamed of! Because after Esmee and Harold have tasted their way through all the supermarket shelves for DGH’s Super Supermarket Wines, it turned out again this year: more expensive is really not necessarily better. There are good bulk wines and lesser mis-en-bouteille-au-chateau’s. There is junk for ten euros and top for two bucks. These are the gems among the liter bottles.

Dekamarkt € 3.99, Dirk van den Broek € 3.99, Boni Supermarket € 3.99, Jan Linders € 3.99, MCD € 3.99, Poiesz Supermarkets € 3.99, Deen € 4, Boon’s Markt € 3.99
Country wine Chile / ‘1 The Best’ LITER Chile Red
Full of fruit. With good Chilean cabernet sauvignons, you can't escape those blackberries. This is one of them. Peppermint freshness on the finish. Just pour liters. NB: the same bottle is sold in different supermarkets, but with a different appearance, see here:

Albert Heijn € 3.99
AH House Wine Fresh & Dry 1 LITER France Rosé
Nothing-wrong-rosé that makes you exclaim on terraces in France in the sun: ‘Wow, how wonderful it is to sit here. And look, those plane trees. And further Café des Sports. And look at those old men playing pétanque. And isn't it lovely, a glass of rosé? That can only be in France.’ Anyway, a rosé like that, which upon arriving in the Netherlands turns out to be just a very simple, red berry but extremely effective rosé. (NB: don't confuse it with the semi-sweet house rosé, which elicits very different reactions.)
score: 7.5

Hoogvliet € 3.79
Hoogvliet Organic House Wine LITER Spain Red
Merlot and syrah take at least half a liter for their account and make themselves known. The extra efforts pay off: the bio liter is better than previous editions despite the slightly lower alcohol percentage. Then we can at least take an extra sip with good conscience. Dark fruit, bay leaf, acting tough, calloused and a work overall. The latter is not an unnecessary luxury when you grow organically.

Boni Supermarket € 3.79, Jan Linders € 3.99, MCD € 3.99, Poiesz Supermarkets € 3.99, Spar € 4.19, Vomar € 3.79, Boon’s Markt € 3.99
Organic House Wine White Dry LITER Spain White
Again this year remarkably cheerful. Treating left and right with pears, sugar melon, green apples and citrus. Still lingers a bit. But where you would give a whack to a whining toddler for that last one, in this case, you ask if the glass can be filled up again. Shouldn't be a problem. There's a liter in it and it costs nothing.
score: 7.5

Albert Heijn € 3.99
AH House Wine Smooth 1 LITER South Africa Red
The smooth South African is a bit less smooth this year, but it doesn't look bad on him. The fruit mix has a bit more currants than usual. Not sweet & sultry, but berry & cool. Fans might need to get used to it, impulse buyers aren't worried and pour this calmly with a plate of ready-made lasagna.
score 7.5
