Beware: these signals indicate a burnout

Corona has not only affected the physical health of humans, it also takes quite a toll mentally. Last year, only seventeen percent of the working population was at risk of burnout, this year that is 56 percent. Because of corona, indeed.

Our country has four million hidden burnouts, writes the AD, these are the people who are at risk of crashing within now and six months. It has everything to do with stress from working from home and the uncertainty of whether you can keep your job, according to research from the National Center for Prevention of Stress and Burnout (a mouthful, yes). What is particularly alarming is that 80 percent of the people heading towards a burnout do not see it coming. Think about your team: the simple math is that one in two is at risk and doesn't even realize it.

Of course, there are the so-called red flags that you can watch for in yourself but also in your friends and colleagues. It is important to remember that a burnout is as unique as the person who gets it, so it is difficult to say how it (literally translated) being burned out manifests in you. Take the vague complaints seriously, because what starts as a bit of stress can ultimately turn into a serious burnout.

1. Difficulty sleeping
Falling head first onto your bed because you are exhausted from the workday, but then not being able to close your eyes? It may seem like a small thing, but poor sleep is one of the first red flags.

2. Lack of energy
Burned out, drained, no desire to drag yourself off the couch and when you wake up already too tired to get up. We all have that sometimes, you might think? True, but if it becomes systematic, then you need to do something about it.

3. Your analytical ability decreases
People who are burned out confuse main issues and minor issues more quickly or no longer see connections, while that used to come naturally.

4. You have more (business) conflicts
An important indicator and not so much a symptom. This can already be noticed at an early stage, in yourself or in others.

5. Not feeling well mentally
But then mentally. Do you forget more than usual and are you more easily distracted? Or are you irritable, indecisive, or do you feel constantly rushed? The feeling of not being yourself is an important signal. Crying for no reason is another one.

6. Physical complaints
A burnout can also manifest through your body in, for example, a lethargic exhausted feeling, a lingering headache, frequent nausea, palpitations, hyperventilation, or stomach pain. It is important that you see all those perhaps vague complaints as a warning.

The chairman of NCPSBO (that sounds better) also says that it can be resolved with a few hours of coaching. See, I was right about that you should treat yourself to a coach.
