From former model to nutrition consultant, Michelle den Hollander flew around the world from shoot to show, but also experienced the struggles of having the ‘right’ sizes. This brought her to where she is now and on Amayzine she gives tips. This week about how to get a grip on a portion.

Do you recognize that? You reach into a full bag of chips and before you know it, you suddenly have the last chip in your hand and start looking for what else is in the kitchen cupboard. Or you’re eating an incredibly delicious pasta, serving yourself for the second or maybe even third time, and after about half an hour, you fall apart and can’t say a word. Exactly: you haven’t really stuck to an average portion. It happens. Just the other week, I was enjoying a series on the couch and suddenly hit the bottom of my Ben & Jerry’s Netflix & Chill’d while I only wanted a few bites.

Now you can blame the makers of the product for those portions being a bit generous here and there. They know exactly how to create the perfect combination of taste and texture, so you can keep eating.

Want to gain a bit more control over your portions? With these tips, it’s easy.

1. Make sure you drink enough, at least two liters a day. It prevents cravings for snacks if you’d rather skip those for a while.

2.  Wait twenty minutes before having another portion. After twenty minutes, your body only realizes that you are eating, so give it some time to feel whether you’ve had enough.

3. Eat mindfully.

4. Do you always cook too much? Set something aside for the next day or freeze it.

5. Serve in the kitchen or prepare a bowl of nuts or chips in the kitchen and put the rest away. This way, you have consciously chosen what a good amount is for you to eat.

6. Share! That delicious bar from our friend Tony is even tastier when you share it with friends, and that goes for more products, of course.

If you stick to small changes, they quickly become habits. And this way, you’ll be eating portions that you feel good about in no time, including that one where you suddenly find your hand at the bottom of the bag. Because they are too delicious to skip.
