What all successful people do at the end of the year

writing adeline

Maybe it's because of the lockdown, but suddenly my timeline is flooded with reflections on 2020 or living rooms covered with large sheets to set goals. Normally, I stumble towards the finish of a year from party to party (I miss this), but now it seems like we are simultaneously making lists with overviews. And maybe I've also googled what those self-adhesive sheets for your wall cost and where I can order them. Because one thing is for sure: it is a habit of successful people to do this.

Actually, it's a bit of self-reflection, to see what you've learned from this year. I hope a lot, because we've had plenty of time for that. Then you move on with what you want. Success goes hand in hand with perseverance, not stopping where someone else sits down in despair, and you mainly get that through a clear goal. Research shows that successful people do not get thrown off course because they know exactly what they want.

Then you naturally come to the most important point, because how do you do that?
It's simple. Buy a nice book or a few large sheets and a pack of nice markers or pencils. Make one sheet a kind of calendar per month about the past year and the other sheet a nice list with 2021 on top. Now write down what you learned or did each month and what you are proud of or what has moved you forward in the past year. Take a moment to reflect on small and big things, on small and big victories, and see it as a success. You've accomplished this beautifully.

Now take the other sheet and go wild on 2021. Write down your wishes and dreams as concretely as you can. Do you have a revenue goal or do you want to save? Attach numbers to it. Do you want to take a nice trip? Plan a month, write down a budget that you need to save, and don't forget the location. Do you want a new job? Visualize it by describing it in detail. And are you not good with words? Collaging is also allowed. Grab a magazine, start tearing and cutting, and make a mood board.

Finally: frequently refer to your goals while you are working on them. Hang it somewhere in the house so you can look at them. Flip through your book every morning with your coffee. The more you know that you want this, the easier it is to find motivation to do it.

A few more tips from (business) successful people like Oprah, Bill Gates, and Richard Branson:

  1. Always carry a notebook with you wherever you go to write down good ideas.
  2. Maintain a fixed morning ritual.
  3. Dare to ask yourself difficult questions and give yourself an honest answer.
  4. Limit the choices you have to make in a day by eliminating them. For example, Mark Zuckerberg and Angela Merkel always wear the same thing, which reduces the number of decisions they have to make each day.
