10 unnecessary stupid facts about the moon

10 unnecessary stupid facts about the moon

We know quite a lot about the moon. Hello, twelve people have walked on it during six Apollo missions. We have placed measuring equipment, brought back pieces of the moon for research, we watch live on cameras, and yet that gigantic sphere in the sky continues to amaze us. Did you already know this about the moon?

1. Neil Armstrong was the first human to set foot on the moon, Gene Cernan was the last in 1972 during the Apollo 17 mission. Why haven't we gone back to the moon since then?

2. During the day, it is a scorching 123 degrees Celsius on the moon, while at night it freezes at 223 degrees.

3. On the moon, you weigh about one-sixth of what you weigh on Earth.

4. There are still two golf balls on the moon's surface, hit miles away during the Apollo 14 mission by astronaut Alan Shepard. They are the farthest golf balls ever hit.

5. Did you know that the moon is a remnant from a collision between Earth and another planet?

6. The difference is about 40,000 kilometers. When it is a full moon, the moon does not always appear the same size. When it is farthest from Earth, it looks a bit smaller. When the moon is as close as possible to Earth, it appears 14 percent larger and 30 percent brighter than average.

7. The moon has several mountains. The largest, Mons Huygens, is 4700 meters high. Mount Everest on Earth is nearly twice as high at 8848 meters.

8. Our moon is slowly but surely saying goodbye to Earth. Yes, it's slowly drifting away. Not very fast (at a speed of 3.78 centimeters per year), about as fast as your fingernails grow.

9. The moon is expensive. A piece of moon rock weighing 0.2 grams was once sold for over 422,500 dollars. Wow.

10. Pizza Hut once had the plan to engrave their logo on the moon with lasers. The idea was scrapped when it turned out that the logo would have to be as big as, um, Texas.
