Dave Roelvink says he gets a genius as a baby

Dave Roelvink and his girlfriend Jazzlyn had an ultrasound and good news upfront: everything is completely healthy with their unborn son. That is of course always nice. But there was still something going on in the ultrasound, Dave writes with the photo. ‘And guess what, it's going to be a genius,’ followed by: ‘94% brain capacity (the average is 50%).’ Perhaps his son will already be able to tell Dave at the age of two that ‘is’ is a verb and that ‘once’ is the word he was looking for in his first sentence.

According to the doctor where Dave and Jazzlyn were, 5.8 percent of all babies have more brain capacity than their son, and the rest therefore less. It won't surprise you that everyone in the comments is stunned. Donny wonders how this is possible (so do we) and Dave himself already said: ‘They will never believe this.’

Ehh, well... I indeed didn't believe it and so I went on a little investigation and surprise, surprise: Dave is wrong. Now I'm not a doctor, but I guess something went wrong in conveying information here. There is no such thing as people using only 50 percent of their brain capacity. Babies use only 30 percent and later learn to use the other 70 percent.

That was once a myth that was quite well-known: that we all would only use 10 percent. And that for example Scarlett Johansson in the movie Lucy discovered a drug that could use the full 100 percent. To quote Donald Trump: fake news. We all use our full brains.

No idea what is actually meant by this unborn genius, maybe Dave misunderstood it and that his mini-me-to-be has larger brains than 94 percent of all others. So not brain capacity, but brain content. That can certainly be the case: boys generally have larger brains than girls and the longer babies stay in the womb, the larger their brains are. And if I'm completely off here, I would love to hear that. No idea how large my brain content and/or capacity was at my birth but I enjoy learning something new every day.

So, that was my task for today. I'm not saying here that they can't or won't bring a genius into the world, you know: that can all happen. And then that son can at least explain very well why that was not visible on this scan. And of course, the most important thing: the child is healthy and has two loving parents. That is ultimately what it all comes down to.
