Huda Beauty is the hit in makeup and skincare right now

Huda Kattan Huda Beauty

Everything she launches seems to turn to gold. It is the American beauty queen Huda Kattan who is conquering the makeup world and now blows out one candle for her skincare line WISHFUL. I only missed one product in her collection, but that is now available too: the eyebrow pencil. I was one of the first to test it, and she has done it again, you know. The color, the texture, and the application: it is exactly as you expect. Even more so. And besides testing, I also got the opportunity to interview her. A behind-the-scenes look at Huda Kattan.

What makes this product really different from other eyebrow pencils?
‘It took three years to launch a product that doesn’t exist yet, and that is difficult in the beauty industry where there is already so much. I often use castor oil or coconut oil for my eyebrows because my hairs often fall out. This oil had to be included in this pencil to make it personal, and that worked. With a pencil tip of 0.9 millimeters that allows you to create real hair-like lines, this is one that didn’t exist before.’

Why makeup first and then skincare?
‘Actually, I would have preferred to start with a skincare line rather than a makeup line. I have always been very interested in skincare because my skin wasn’t that great. Since my teenage years, I have struggled with acne, uneven texture, and I battle with pigmentation spots. That is also the reason why I was obsessed with finding the best products for my skin. When I started blogging, this was an outlet and a good platform to share my homemade skincare tips. WISHFUL is therefore really a dream come true.’

What do you want in five years?
‘Many of the ideas for the collection started with the ingredients I have been using for years in my ‘do it yourself’ products. For example, I used to always make a mask from pineapple and papaya, and that’s how ‘Yo Glow’ was born. We create products that we think: this is a gap in the market, so who knows what the future holds for us.’

What is the best advice you ever received?
‘How you feel about yourself and how you see yourself should not be based on what others think of you. You are beautiful inside and out.’

Yo Glow Enzyme Scrub, from €20.40 Huda Beauty

How did WISHFUL come about?
‘The collection must consist of products that really do what they promise. We are not going to solve wrinkles with this collection because we know that we cannot develop this as a non-medical brand. So instead, we wanted to create simple products for a broad audience. You can describe our collection as gentle, simple, and effective.’

What characterizes the ‘Huda look?’
‘I love makeup. Sometimes I go all out with full coverage and false lashes. But there are also moments when I prefer to choose a natural look with just a layer of Legit Lashes Mascara that is unbelievably good. It really depends on what I have to do and how I feel, there is not one typical look. I want to inspire people, which is why I continuously experiment with makeup, and I enjoy that.’

If you could choose one product, which one would it be?
‘Choosing is almost impossible, but if I have to choose, I go for our lip contour. You can use it all over your lips, it stays on all day, and it corrects the lip shapes. But it’s still hard to choose one product because there is so much love in the entire collection.’

Has your life changed dramatically due to the lockdown and Covid-19?
‘I am very happy at home with my family. Taking a time-out in daily life is very difficult, but the lockdown allows me to take time for myself and enjoy it. I always felt like I was driving a million miles an hour and literally never stopped. Recently, I lived offline for a bit, spent time with my family, and finally decorated my new house. I had the time to be ‘Hoodie’ (my nickname). Sometimes it’s so easy to be busy every day with work, meetings, late-night calls, and photography that I lost balance in life. Don’t get me wrong: I love working hard, but taking a step back is sometimes important for a bit more balance.’
