Forget the beach bed: you want to surf in Tenerife

Vacation. Forgive me for sitting here and sighing a bit sentimentally first. I catch myself staring at the single airplane flying over and then I think about where I would go.

Vacation. Forgive me for sitting here and sighing a bit sentimentally first. I catch myself staring at the single airplane flying over and then I think about where I would go. I am well-rested by now, thanks to the curfew, so if I leave now, I don't necessarily need to settle on a sunbed. What then? Action in a taxi on a sunny island, that sounds good to me. And since reading is not forbidden and we will really be allowed to go soon, I am already thinking about my destination.

A friend of mine once left for three months (!) to Tenerife. What he was going to do there, I wanted to know. Surfing, was his answer. You might quickly think of lounging on the beach at this sun destination, but think again: Tenerife is the watersport paradise of the Canary Islands. And let me tell you, I absolutely love all sports that involve ‘water’. Especially when a boat and a sail are involved.

If you ask a sailor about the ideal conditions, they often get a dreamy look in their eyes. A clear blue sky, plenty of sun, and a steady 22 knots of wind is often the answer. Newsflash: in Tenerife, it is always this weather. Maybe I should move here? By the way, it's not just sailors who get restless here; surfers also get excited about this weather forecast.

In Tenerife, there are 300 days of wind. Not the strong, unpleasant kind we know here, but a pleasant constant breeze that makes one side of the island a hotspot for windsurfers. It's no coincidence that the world championships in windsurfing are held in El Médano. Not really into windy conditions? The eastern and southeastern sides of the island are very suitable for practicing your SUP skills. There are plenty of coves and cliffs that you can't easily reach on foot. And in the meantime, you get a nice workout because with Stand Up Paddling, you engage all those muscles.

And did I mention that you can also dive? Kayak? Bodyboard? There is a great place for every water sport in Tenerife. I am going to book and then look into where I will sleep and eat. Surfing in Tenerife.
