It is a very bad idea to save alcohol for the weekend

Drinking on the weekend

I often say around that I don't drink during the week or as little as possible, because it keeps you so nice and clear. But when the Friday afternoon drinks are in sight, I'm the first to pop the cork off the bottle. Is it actually a good idea to save that alcohol for the weekend? No, say addiction professors.

I'm not alone, because there are plenty of types who don't drink during office days (and are happy for hours) and go all the way on the weekend. A bottle of white at lunch, red by the fire, an Aperol to mark the transition from afternoon to evening, and did someone say champagne breakfast? Those free days are a kind of starting signal to consume alcohol, but that's really not such a tight plan.

Not drinking on weekdays and then grabbing the first best bottle on the weekend is just as bad or maybe even worse for your health. Especially if you binge, which simply means pouring as much alcoholic drink into yourself in the shortest possible time. Just think of Lloret or Salou from back in the day, something like that.

Both scenarios bring problems with them, by the way. Drinking every day doesn't give your body time to break down alcohol. No matter how nice alcohol tastes, it ultimately has something toxic in it that needs to come out of your body. But consuming large amounts in one or two days causes even more problems. And then especially one impressive problem: the more alcohol in a shorter time, the greater the chance someone has of dying from an alcohol-related cause. That's what you call no small matter.

How does it work? By downing a six-pack of dry white wine in a short time, you put such pressure on your body that you run a greater risk of succumbing. It's not just about the kidneys or the heart, but even about your brain. Your brain? Certainly, because those gaps in your memory the next day are a signal that you've inflicted damage on your angry little brain. Alcohol is also bad for sleeping well, and poor sleep is also a problem in the long run.

Of course, there's nothing to argue against science, so having one weekday wine instead of liters on the weekend isn't such a crazy idea.
