Say wine, snacks or haute cuisine and the gourmands at online food magazine FavorFlav know where to drink, how to eat it and what to cook. This time our cheffies serve you: Lidl comes with the most sustainable supermarket in the Netherlands.

The most sustainable supermarket in the Netherlands is opening in Almere. There, Lidl is opening a new store that is extremely green, from the insulation of the walls to the grass around the building.

The new Lidl branch is the first CO2- and energy-neutral supermarket in the Netherlands. How do they manage it? Actually, the whole store is a little construction kit, as it can be completely taken apart and recycled. Those old blue polo shirts of the employees? They are now insulation for the facade of the building: nice and sustainable. And it doesn't stop at the store; the surroundings have also been greened: for example, the supermarket has planted elephant grass because it absorbs a lot of water.

Charging bike
The refrigerators and freezers hum because there are more than 1,500 solar panels on the roof. Nice and sustainable, and a very friendly energy bill at the end of the year. When people come shopping with their electric bike, they can charge the bike in front of the store. And the stock is delivered by electric trucks.

Nice going
This is not the only store where Lidl shows its green side; they are also busy in other branches. They combat food waste by offering products at low prices, so less needs to be thrown away. They use less plastic, among other things by no longer packaging apples in a plastic bag. The cooling section only contains sustainable fish, the milk comes from pasture-raised cows, and the chicken is definitely not a battery chicken.
