Netflixtip: Diep Graven: De Verdwijning van Birgit Meier

Hello dear Netflix addicts. Or true crime enthusiasts. Even better: both. I have something fun for you again, because there is a new miniseries waiting for you. Four episodes of about an hour each. And it was about a case that took place close to us, but that I personally had never heard of: that of Birgit Meier. This 41-year-old woman disappeared on August 14, 1989, in Germany.

Birgit's brother Wolfgang was a police officer himself, so he requested that her house be treated as a crime scene immediately, but due to the Göhrde murders (four people were murdered in Germany) that were happening at the time, Birgit's case quickly fell to the background for the police.

What I find interesting about this docuseries is that the family was heavily involved. Her brother Wolfgang spoke extensively about why he never gave up and about his personal frustration with the investigation and the police. I find that a refreshing perspective, because often documentaries about such cases start from the premise that the police ultimately did an incredibly good job. Well, not here.

In short: this is definitely a recommendation, you know. I initially thought it wouldn't be a very special case, but because the family had so much to say, it felt very personal and I was completely invested. So stream it.
