This is why a dog sniffs your crotch

Surely, this is really in the top three uncomfortable moments that are absolutely out of your control. Because it takes two living beings for this situation, one of which is you and the other is a dog - so with that, you can't exactly consult for a moment that this is very arelaxt. Because really, I love dogs, but it's so gigantically awkward when you walk in somewhere and that barking four-legged friend speeds towards your cross at breakneck speed. Only to sniff at length. Not cool.

Not that those dogs get it, mind you. They just keep happily doing it. But why? Because dogs also do it to other dogs, as I am sure you have seen. Well, the explanation is pretty simple: this is how they gather ‘information’ about another dog. Through genitals, or through the butt. For example, what sex the other dog is, hormones but also stress they can pick up this way and even whether the other is a bit friendly. And, yes: they can pick up this information from us in the same way. So if your crotch is being examined again and the dog doesn't look at you after that... Then your genitals may indicate that you are not a nice person. Know that again.

It also makes sense that dogs do that with their noses: after all, there are 300 million smell sensors in there. By comparison, we ‘only’ have six million. And with their good noses, they can also smell if you have recently had sex (whuuut?), if you are menstruating or if you have just given birth. Pretty cool feature to have actually. But why does it have to be so uncomfortable?
