It's easy, delicious, and you know exactly what you put in your own sauce. Still, we often hesitate to make ketchup. No need for that, because it's just as easy as all those other sauces. So come on, take that hand blender out of the cupboard and start making your own homemade ketchup from now on.
INGREDIENTS
1 kilo tomatoes, core removed and cut into pieces
1 white onion
75 grams of sugar
100 ml red wine vinegar
1 can of tomato puree
Salt and pepper
Ketchup is indispensable on (or next to) your fries and no toastie or mayochup is complete without it. And it's really even tastier when you make your own ketchup. Add fresh herbs and spices that you like and make it your own signature ketchup.
Here's how to make ketchup yourself
- Heat some olive oil in a saucepan. Sauté the onion, tomatoes, and tomato paste briefly in it.
- Then add the sugar, water, and red wine vinegar and let it simmer for a few minutes until the tomatoes have softened.
- Season the mixture with pepper and salt and blend it smooth with a hand blender. To get an ultra-smooth ketchup, pass the ketchup through a sieve after using the hand blender.
Adding herbs and spices
To give it your own twist, you can add spices like cayenne pepper, cinnamon, paprika powder, nutmeg, coriander seeds, or ginger in the first step. Fresh herbs like basil and parsley are better added at the end before you blend the ketchup smooth with the hand blender.
