Whut: these are the 5 most expensive wines in the world

expensive wines

Say wine, snacks or haute cuisine and the gourmands at online food magazine FavorFlav know where to drink, how to eat it and what to cook. This time our cheffies serve you: these are the 5 most expensive wines in the world.

Did you dig a little deeper into your pockets for this year's Christmas wine than usual? Instead of consulting our list of budget tips from top sommeliers, did you let loose a bit at the local wine shop? Of course, it could be that you're taking a more modest approach this year, and then that budget list comes in handy... Either way, we haven't seen prices as outrageous as these this year.

Because these five specimens each fetch enough to buy a house in the Netherlands. Here they are, listed in ascending order of price, the five most expensive wines in the world:

Chateau Lafite 1869
Where the auctioneers at the start of the auction in Hong Kong thought this bottle would go for around €6,600, an anonymous bidder ultimately snapped it up for no less than €190,000. What?! Well, save your surprise for later, because from here on, it only gets steeper...

Heidsieck 1907
First of all: this bottle is no longer drinkable. So why pay the shocking amount of €227,000 for it? Because the ship it was transported on was sunk by a German torpedo during World War II. In 1997, the wreck was found, and two thousand bottles could be salvaged. Not drinkable anymore, but a strong story is what you're paying for here. I imagine it would be very hard to resist when you really have a mega champagne craving.

Cheval Blanc 1947
Okay, we are talking about a St. Emilion Premier Grand Cru here, and this wine is considered the best Bordeaux wine ever made. But you must be a huge enthusiast (and loaded with cash) if you're willing to pay the €252,000 that an anonymous bidder paid to call the bottle hers (or his).

Chateau Mouton – Rothschild 1945
One of the richest families on earth will indeed not deliver a wine that you can find in the store for a few bucks. Their vineyards produce very highly priced specimens anyway, and this Jeroboam-sized bottle costs no less than €256,000. But you do get three liters for that.

Screaming Eagle Cabernet 1992
Yes, I would scream like an eagle if I could cough up €410,000 for a bottle of red wine. The wine from winemaker Heidi Barrett’s Napa Valley vineyard in California fetched half a million dollars at auction. Even better news: the money went to a good cause.
