What you want to know (and see) about Omar Sy

If Omar Sy (43) is in a movie or series, I want to see it. Lupin was marked with a marker in my agenda on January 8. And I've been googling like crazy ever since to find out when the second half of the series with Assane Diop will be available online. Until then, I'll watch everything that features Omar Sy once again.

I always feel a bit cheated when Netflix only puts half a series online. Or worse: one episode per week. The prediction from Netflix experts is that the second half of Lupin will be online between now and April. At least we have something to look forward to during this lockdown. Apparently, portraying a story about master thief Lupin is Sy's dream. “If I were British, I would have said James Bond, but since I’m French, I said Lupin,” Omar says in an interview. I still think the makers of Bond need to reconsider that James is of British descent. Give me Omar as a replacement for Daniel Craig. Although I still bet on Idris Elba, because: British. Meanwhile, Lupin is already the hit of 2021, which was to be expected in France, where Lupin is a sort of Sherlock Holmes figure.

I dove into the archives of Omar, because who is he actually? Not an easy one, journalists say about him. He once walked out in the middle of an interview because a question didn't sit well with him. Now I keep wondering what that question was. He married Hélène in 2007, a charity founder with whom he has three daughters and two sons. Omar and Hélène had been together for ten years when they got married. They alternate living near Paris and LA. Hélène and Omar find LA a better environment for their children to grow up in, Hélène told ELLE in an interview. Because they are freer there and can live outside the spotlight. Omar's eldest daughter turned 20 this week.

Back to my love for Omar, which started with Intouchables. A masterpiece that goes on repeat once a year. He won a César for Best Actor for the role of Driss, being the first black Frenchman to do so. After Intouchables, it was the film Samba that I simply found brilliant, where he starred alongside actress Charlotte Gainsbourg. He also appeared in blockbusters like Inferno (you know, from Davinci) and X-Men, Burnt (which I liked as the only person in the world) and Jurassic World. But I especially prefer the French works of Omar Sy, which I find particularly brilliant.

Want to see something from Omar this weekend? Check out the trailers for Demain tout commence, Yao, and Samba. You can choose or just watch them all.
