Creators of La Casa de Papel come with a new series

New series from the creators of Casa de Papel

Were you afraid of falling into a hole after the end of La Casa de Papel? That makes sense, but it's absolutely not necessary. It looks like we're getting a very worthy replacement, from the same creator, so it should be good in terms of addictive quality. Alex Pina, the man behind La Casa de Papel, has announced that he is working on a new series. The collaboration with Netflix has also been extended, so it's no longer a question of whether we will get something new from him, but when. Look, that's good news.

This time his inspiration came from the corona pandemic, but from an aspect that was completely foreign to me. In conversation with The Hollywood Reporter he told me that many Spaniards had bunkers built due to corona, and he immediately saw a good story in that. I immediately wondered if this is also the case in the Netherlands, that the super-rich have built a complete bunker where they can live for years. Because yes, in Spain it mainly concerns millionaires who made their homes underground.

And the still untitled series will be about those rich people, according to Pina. ‘Some of those new bunkers that were built were just luxurious homes, but underground. Up to fifteen floors down, with exclusive amenities, such as cinemas, swimming pools, spas, gyms, and even gardens, with water and food to survive for up to five years. An underground living community where up to 75 people could go. And then we started thinking about what it would be like there. Social, familial, and romantic relationships; in an underground bunker where they had hastily and exclusively fled to.’

Honestly: I think this sounds really cool as a plot for a series, but maybe even more as a plot for a bloody horror film. I actually want to see a documentary about it, because I'm really curious about what these gigantic luxurious bunkers looked like in reality. Are there still people living there, who might have found it nice and quiet and safe underground? I hope they have hauled in tons of vitamin D, by the way.

But there is of course more good news, because that spin-off of La Casa de Papel about Berlin is still on the way. If everything goes according to schedule, it will premiere on Netflix in 2023. So plenty of fun to look forward to.
