Ingredients

  • 1 small onion
  • 1 red pepper
  • 2 cloves of garlic
  • 3 tbsp sunflower oil
  • 150 g minced meat (half beef, half pork)
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tsp paprika powder
  • 1 tsp coriander powder
  • 1 tbsp sambal
  • ½ tbsp ketjap manis
  • salt
  • sriracha (optional), to taste
  • 8 slices of bread of your choice
  • 200 g grated cheese, butter

Soraya: “Flaming toasties are of course a great invention. Only the supermarket across the street from me doesn't sell them, so I decided to make them myself. Not difficult at all. This recipe is enough for about four toasties. I usually triple this recipe so I can throw a whole stock of toasties in the freezer. After all, they are just lying in the freezer at the supermarket. This way you always have flaming toasties within reach for a bargain.”

Here's how to make fresh flaming toasties

  1. Chop the onion. Finely chop the pepper and garlic.
  2. Heat the oil in a frying pan and sauté the onion for 3 minutes. Add the pepper and garlic and stir-fry briefly. Add the minced meat to the pan and brown it.
  3. Once the minced meat is cooked, add the tomato paste, paprika powder, coriander powder, sambal, ketjap manis, and a pinch of salt to the pan. Taste the minced meat (always keep tasting). Not spicy enough? Add as much sriracha as you like until you're satisfied!
  4. Time to build: bread, grated cheese, minced meat, grated cheese, bread.
  5. Spread a thin layer of butter on the outside of the toasties and fry them in the toast maker or in the pan until golden brown on both sides.
  6. Serve with sauce of your choice (I always serve a mix of mayo and chili sauce with it, yum yum).
