This airline is going to add beds to their economy class

New in airplane sleeping spots for economy future images

I seriously think this is the best news of the day. Maybe even of the week. Maybe you didn't know this about me yet, but I love to travel. Preferably as much as possible. From Iceland to Bali, and since I was twelve, I've been deeply in love with the United States (minus their ridiculous legislation). Now, of course, it is almost inevitable to fly a lot, and I always find that a sensitive issue because I have quite a bit of fear of flying (thankfully not so bad that I don't dare to board, but I have shed many a tear mid-air) and I sleep terribly in an airplane. No, excuse me: I just don't sleep.

And especially that last part is something that many passengers have to deal with. Those seats just don't go back far enough, you can't really lean your head comfortably against anything (not even if you have those neck pillows) and you always wake up completely stiff if you've dozed off for a moment. Pure misery. And also not really of this time, right? Why can only business class lie completely flat and economy class cannot?

Air New Zealand agrees with this and that's why they have grand plans, which they presented this week: bunk beds for economy class. HEAVENLY. These are a kind of bunk beds where each bed has its own ‘cubby’. So enough privacy, with a nightlight and a curtain. You also get a pillow and a blanket, in other words: the recipe to be able to close your eyes for a moment.

They want to introduce these sleeping pods on their longer flights. Here's how it works: you simply book your ticket with the corresponding seat, and in addition, you can ‘rent’ such a bed for four hours. The pillows, blankets, and fitted sheets will of course be replaced every time.

You have to be quick, because they start quite small. The first airplanes will only have six of these beds. The costs are not yet known, but I assume they will be somewhat reasonable, since it remains economy class and you only rent the bed for four hours. But still, being able to sleep for four hours, horizontally, on a flight? Sounds amazing.

The plan is to launch the first airplanes with these beds into the air in 2024. Loooove it. It's also logical that a airline from New Zealand comes up with this, because they really have gi-gantic long flights. In September, they will start with the longest one, from Auckland to New York. You will be in the airplane for no less than seventeen hours non-stop. Well, then such a bed comes in handy...
