This is how you tackle Christmas when you're completely broke

Tips if you're broke at Christmas

December is already expensive and suddenly nature decides that it's going to freeze hard, making your gas bill one big upward line. Something to be happy about, of course, because global warming, but you were already broke from those ridiculously expensive groceries and that damned energy company. How do you do December when you're broke?

Viva la vintage. Agree to give each other a vintage find. It's better for the environment, because there are plenty of items out there, and it's especially valuable when someone has searched for something that suits you. While it ultimately costs less. Even better: don't give gifts and come up with an alternative. Write everyone a nice letter explaining why you love them or make a booklet with vouchers for things to do together. From a beach walk to curling someone's hair for a special occasion; anything goes.

By the way, don't focus too much on those items, because research shows again this year that it's about the time spent together and sharing experiences. I have the warmest memories of playing endless Monopoly and gourmetting as a little girl. There may not have been a lot of gifts under the tree, but I was already looking forward to those hours of playing Monopoly together in the summer.

Cook on coals. Preparing something on the barbecue is cheaper than blowing all that gas into the air. And you also have a good excuse to cool off outside from all that family. Gourmetting costs you a calm 21 percent more than last year, so firing up the barbecue isn't such a crazy idea after all. And for heaven's sake, let people bring food and drinks, because you really don't have to bear the costs and all that work alone.

Agree on a dress code for which you don't have to throw euros out the window. ‘As warm as possible’ is a great theme for this year. You probably still have a ski suit lying around, and if not, you can borrow one from a friend. ‘From your own closet’ is also a great dress code. This way, you ensure that no one goes shopping. Still in curls and glitter? Shop in a friend's closet and vice versa. You don't have to spend anything but still look brand new.
