Sushi made from stamppot

Say wine, snacks or haute cuisine and the gourmands at online food magazine FavorFlav know where to drink, how to eat it and what to cook. This time our cheffies serve you: For the adventurous eater: sushi made from mashed potatoes.

What the farmer doesn't know, he won't eat. So those little rolls with rice and seaweed, your so-called ‘sushi’? No way, pack it up again, he won't touch that. But what if you make sushi with a good old-fashioned mashed potato dish inside? Even the most die-hard potato eaters can't say no to that.

Ingredients

  • 1 kilogram of potatoes
  • 1 bag of kale
  • 1 smoked sausage
  • 1 jar of large pickles
  • nori sheets
  • gravy

Crazy idea from Lidl, we have to admit. The nori sheets are filled with a delicious creamy kale mash and served with a dip of old-fashioned gravy. Creative types can start to vary: why not use hutspot? Or a mash of raw endive? Let your imagination run wild and roll all Dutch mash dishes deliciously up.

Here's how to make mashed potato sushi

  1. Cut the potatoes into cubes, cover with cold water and bring to a boil. Add the chopped kale, and cook for 20 to 25 minutes until tender.
  2. Drain, and with pepper, salt, and a knob of butter, mash it into a tasty puree.
  3. Also heat the smoked sausage according to the instructions on the package and cut it into long strips.
  4. Cut the pickles into long strips as well.
  5. Place a nori sheet on the bamboo mat, spread the mashed potatoes over it, and place the pickles and smoked sausage in the center. Roll it up neatly and tightly, sealing the ends with a bit of water.
  6. Cut into nice pieces and dip the mashed potato sushi (with chopsticks) into the bowl of gravy.
