8 x things you only recognize if you have an older sister

the Olsen sisters, Miley and Noah Cyrus, and Bella and Gigi Hadid

I have always found having a sister fantastic. It took a while, but now my - six years older - sister is fortunately thinking the same way. After all, I was for years the little and sometimes quite annoying sister. Well, there wasn't much I could do about that, right? My sister was my great example, so I wanted to be around her as much as possible. And when she had friends over, I preferred to be there non-stop. Actually, I was just a kind of stalker, and that wasn't always appreciated when I was younger. Fortunately, it all turned out well, and I am no longer the little annoying sister, but we are partners in crime who share everything with each other. The points below will undoubtedly resonate with all little sisters.

1. You are always ‘the little sister of’

Well, I didn't mind this at all as the biggest fan of my sister. I can imagine that there are also people who find this less fun, because after all, you are also someone with your own identity. But I actually loved it when the ‘big’ friends of my cool sister realized that I was family. I was so proud in those moments.

2. Your big sister cleared the path for you

‘Do you realize that I had to fight for my rights?’ I have heard this remark all too often from my sister, and with this, she actually says that she has indirectly fought for MY rights. Well, of course, I am very grateful to her for that. I was indeed allowed much more from my parents when I was younger, but isn't that also a little thing about being the oldest vs. the youngest? In any case, a thousand thanks, sis.

3. You have seen everything at least once

From using tampons to applying eyeshadow, I found it quite interesting to observe all this as a little girl. And because of that, I quickly knew more than my friends without such a big sister. You can imagine that I made quite an impression with all this valuable information. The most fascinating thing of all was the drawer in my sister's closet, which contained hundreds of different types of bra straps. At that time, it was very trendy to switch straps. I could stare for minutes at all the colored straps with flowers and fake diamonds; I found it so beautiful what was all there. Of course, my sister still doesn't know to this day that I regularly rummaged through her closet like a kind of Joe Goldberg.

4. Your mother bought the same clothes

I was over the moon when my sister and I received the same shirt from our mother. I believe my sister was just a little less enthusiastic about it, but funny enough, she did wear the clothes. I still vividly remember that we walked around in the same bikini for a summer. In every photo from that vacation, you see me beaming next to my sister by the pool; you couldn't make me happier.

5. A big sister gives the best advice

A broken heart, fights with parents, bad grades at school: your sister had experienced it all and therefore gave the best advice. Especially when you wanted to discuss something that you found way too awkward to share with your parents. Who did she actually talk to back then? I often wonder about that. Even now, I go to her for advice; she is and remains the best advisor.

6. Suddenly you became friends

Suddenly, a change occurs, and you transform from a little annoying sister into an equal friend. This largely goes hand in hand with growing up. For us, the friendship began to develop when I was about seventeen, roughly at the same age when my interest in boys started. That can't be a coincidence, right? After I shared my first stories about boys with her, I slowly but surely noticed that stories were being shared back. I was of course overjoyed with that. It's quite special how that works: from sharing nothing to sharing everything.

7. Your big sister was your personal chauffeur

I was thrilled when my sister got her driver's license; that meant she was the one who could pick me up from parties from then on. I will never forget the moment when I, as a twelve-year-old, stood totally in shock at a FRIS party. For the first time in my life, I was ‘grinded’ by a boy, and I found it quite unpleasant. I quickly called my sister, asking if she could please come and get me. Not much later, I was picked up by my cool big sister at the Melkweg; now that was a ride.

8. Sisters are forever

The bond between two sisters is a pact made for once and for all. It's like an unconditional friendship, but just a little different. You never judge each other and have each other's backs without expecting anything in return. Anyone who comes for your sister, comes for you. Sometimes you are a bit angry or irritated, but that never lasts long. Oh, and last but not least: as sisters, you always team up against everything and everyone.
