This is why there is a bow on your underwear

Have you ever noticed that almost every string, hipster, or pair of underwear has such a cute bow on the front, or instead a charm or (deliciously vulgar) diamond? And have you never wondered why that is there? I have always assumed that this is purely for decoration. But is there not more behind this little detail?

It turns out that this is indeed the case, because this bow was invented for a reason (and a clear function). Here follows a little history lesson, which you will think about every morning from now on while putting on your underwear. The bow turns out to be a brilliant invention.

Well, nowadays our underwear has elastic, which means it doesn't slide off our butts so quickly. However, this was a very different story in the past: to ensure that your underwear stayed in place, a ribbon was threaded through the top and tied together at the front. And thus the infamous bow was born.

But that wasn't all, the bow had another important function. Long ago, when people still burned candles instead of using electric light, they often had to get dressed in the dark. You guessed it: putting on underwear in the twilight is not that easy. How do you know, for example, which is the front and which is the back? Exactly: that is what the bow was meant for. Clever, right? This way I teach you something new.
