6 x why life should be a musical

Quite a few people around me regularly flee across the border to have a normal evening out for dinner. Last Christmas holiday, I was one of those people and stayed with my beloved for a few nights in Antwerp. What were we most looking forward to? Going to the movies and eating popcorn. So instead of shopping and wandering around Antwerp, we went straight to the cinema to watch the new adaptation of the musical West Side Story. We enjoyed the touching story, the familiar music, and all the beautiful costumes in which there was amazing dancing for two and a half hours. At first, I was a bit apprehensive about the long sit, but time flew by. I thought afterwards, if only life were a musical. And I still think that, for the following reasons.

1. You sing away all your worries
How nice would it be if we could sing our sadness away? But also, communicating through song is something I always find very enjoyable in musicals. Although people around me might not be very happy about it, because they would have to listen to me for hours. I can be quite long-winded, so with a song, this would definitely get out of hand. Conversely, I also don't think I have the patience to listen to everyone's singing (complaining) every day. But still, the idea is romantic.

2. Everyone can actually sing
To come back to my previous point: also because of my voice, I would absolutely not do anyone a favor with my singing. In fact: no one would want to have a conversation with me anymore. Have you ever heard someone sing a false note in a musical? That's what I mean: we all deserve this gift. Wouldn't that be fantastic?

3. With all that dancing, you are in top shape
Away with those sad home workouts and running. Because if life were a musical, we would be dancing all day long and thus always be in top shape. We all dance at home, but how fun would it be if we also danced outside with passersby? Okay, a bit awkward of course, but you would get used to it. Moreover, people in musicals can dance incredibly well, so we would definitely need to have this gift too. After all, no one is waiting for uncoordinated people on the street.

4. You look good enough to eat
In musicals, they don't wear sports leggings and a big hoodie all day long, no, in musicals everyone looks good enough to eat. The women wear beautiful dresses and a bow in their hair, and the men also make a bit more effort than the average man in the Netherlands.

5. Life (often) has a happy ending
This might be the most important point: musicals often have a happy ending. People find each other again, they endure a lot, and in the end, love conquers all. How nice it would be if there were a bit more of this in real life.

6. And if it doesn't have a happy ending, it still feels like it does
Okay, not every musical ends well. In fact: many well-known plays end badly. But in a musical, you hardly notice that. As soon as someone dies, another immediately throws in a song. In this way, a twist is given that you actually feel at peace with the whole situation. After all, West Side Story doesn't end all that well either, but I still walked out of the cinema with a big smile on my face.
