Wow: Burning Man 2023 has become one big fiasco

By

So we all thought Fyre Festival was bad? It was — but we didn't know about the upcoming Burning Man 2023 edition... Because that threatens to be many times worse. And it doesn't look like it's going to get better anytime soon: an estimated 70,000 people are still stuck on the site and, as far as they know, there has been one death. What the...

Burning Man is held every year in the Black Rock Desert, in the state of Nevada, USA. Every year it's one huge party in the blazing sun, but this year it went very differently: there was so much rain that festival-goers can't go anywhere. Due to the ground in Black Rock Desert, a thick mush of mud has formed because of the rain, reaching up to their ankles. So it's impossible to bike through (many festival-goers often move around by bike) and especially impossible to get through by car. To give a clearer picture: in 24 hours, the same amount of rain fell as normally falls in three months. The ground there is always so dry — and that's a very tricky combination with rain, resulting in clay-like mud.

Festivalgoers are urged to find a safe place and to take good care of each other. Here's the thing: at Burning Man, there are no bars or food vendors, but everyone brings their own and then trades with other festivalgoers.

Normally, a wooden temple is set on fire every year; that was supposed to happen last night, but due to these circumstances, they didn't do it. Tomorrow the sun is supposed to shine again, but there are also fears that everyone won't be able to head back to civilization until Friday. That seems terrifying to me, because you obviously haven't stocked up on food and drink for that long. And on top of that, it's so remote that many people have no reception or internet — and therefore can't let anyone know that they are okay.

On the Burning Man subreddit it is fortunately read that there is not only panic on the festival site, and that people are really taking care of each other. The photo below was also taken this year, when there was still no cloud in the sky. Hopefully, all the festival-goers can go home soon — and not just on Friday.

It’s not all bad, that double rainbow was amazing!
