skincare coconut oil

Hidden somewhere in your kitchen and perhaps once used as a hair mask: coconut oil. Opinions are divided on this superfood, some are big fans while others think it's plant-based junk. I undoubtedly belong to the fan group. Who did I get this tip from? From Gwyneth Paltrow. She mentioned in an interview two years ago that coconut oil was her holy grail. And I fully agree with her now. Whether I'm cooking or following my 10-step skincare routine in the evening, coconut oil is indispensable for me. But it's good for more things than just a sizzling pan and a treat for your dry hair ends. Curious about the other four amazing beauty benefits? You can read about them below.

1. A whiter smile
Ever heard of oil pulling? With this technique, you swish a full tablespoon of coconut oil around your mouth every day. Just like rinsing with fluoride at the dentist back in the day, but for a quarter of an hour. You really have to be in the mood for it. Although it hasn't been scientifically proven that this technique actually combats yellow teeth, there is a clear difference visible in before and after photos of people who have tried it. One lady even said she received compliments about her whiter smile during a Zoom meeting after just three days. Definitely worth trying for those few euros, I think.

2. Longer and fuller eyelashes
Who doesn't want long, full eyelashes? That can be quite a challenge, especially if you, like me, have naturally short lashes. Option 1, and also the most obvious, is of course an eyelash serum. That works like crazy, but one downside is that you can get dark circles and even a different eye color. That's why option 2 is better: a more natural product, like coconut oil. You apply it every evening to your lashes and within two months you'll see a difference. Not only is eyelash growth stimulated, but your lashes are also hydrated and protected from damage. For these reasons alone, you should definitely give it a try, especially when you look at the price. Compared to a serum, it can save you up to fifty euros.

3. No more dark circles
Besides the fact that coconut oil works wonders for your lashes, it also affects the area under your lashes: the dark circles. Coconut oil ensures that cell renewal progresses faster, making your skin barrier thicker. Since dark circles can be a significant cause of aging skin that becomes thinner, it makes sense that coconut oil can reduce them. And it works very simply: after you've removed your makeup, massage a teaspoon of 100% natural coconut oil under each eye for thirty seconds. Let it fully absorb and voilà: after two weeks, that thick layer of concealer under your eyes is hardly needed anymore.

4. Self-tanner remover
Nice, a fresh layer of self-tanner, until it starts to streak after a week. Then you'd better remove it as quickly as possible. Most people do this by exfoliating the whole thing, but with delicate skin, that can sometimes be too much of a good thing. And then – once again – our jar of coconut oil comes in handy. Apply the oil to the desired areas, let it sit for a few minutes, and gently wipe it off with a soft cloth. Not only does your skin feel mega soft, but you also have a nice glow.

So the next time you go to the supermarket, take a jar of coconut oil home with you. After a few weeks, you won't be able to live without it, just wait and see.
