Dating Disasters: ‘He thought I didn't look like my photos’

In Dating Disasters vertellen anonieme lezers over hun gênantste, meest tenenkrommende en dramatische dates. Deze week: tikkie erbij?

My Tinder date asked me if I wanted to meet at Starbucks for a quick cup of coffee. Normally, I didn't like meeting up so quickly, but I actually thought it was a good idea. Maybe I should just approach this whole dating thing a bit more spontaneously. So off I went, on my bike towards my date without my usual two-hour prep session. He wanted spontaneity, so he got spontaneity.

I arrived completely disheveled. I saw him sitting there, so I didn't have time to tidy myself up a bit. He noticed that too, as his first words were: “Wow, you look different than in the photo!” Okay then… Nice icebreaker. I ordered my usual oat latte with brown sugar syrup, which he paid for, and sat down to take a good look at him. He didn't really look like his photo either, but I was also aware that good lighting and the right angles could do a lot for a person. So I decided not to say anything about it.

He clearly thought differently, as he kept saying that I didn't look like my photo, that he had expected me to be different, and that I actually looked more like his type in the photo. At one point, he even slid one of my photos under my nose and said: “Look, this is what I mean!” It was too embarrassing for words. Eventually, I got so fed up that I said I had forgotten an appointment and had to go. I left my coffee behind. Not long after, I received a message. I still had a silent hope that he had seen the light and realized how rude he had been, but the message consisted of nothing more than a link to a payment request with the words ‘coffee’. I never paid it, and he never asked for it again. Luckily, because otherwise it would have been really embarrassing.
