Dating Disasters: ‘Did he even show up?’

In Dating Disasters vertellen anonieme lezers over hun gênantste, meest tenenkrommende en dramatische dates. Deze week: no-show Sander.
I actually find it a wild concept that we all date people we have never seen in real life. Yet I participate in it myself, at least until this disaster date. To find the love of your life, you have to take the plunge every now and then, so I dressed up to have a drink with Sander, whom I had met on a dating app.
We hadn't talked much yet. Actually, we had only exchanged a few pleasantries and picked a date and a place. I've since unlearned that impulsivity, because the trouble started as soon as I arrived. Just before I got there, he texted me: ‘I'm already here, what do you want to drink?’ I texted back that he could wait a bit with ordering, as I was almost at the door. Maybe it's strange, but after your date sends you such a message, you expect him to actually be inside, right? Well, apparently that expectation was too high, because he was nowhere to be found.
Confused, I texted him if I was in the right café, but I actually knew I couldn't have gone wrong. I ordered a drink, and while I waited for his response, an unknown man sat down way too close to me. He started talking to me and asked me dozens of questions: where I was from, what my name was, if I was alone, and if he could order a drink for me. Almost a quarter of an hour had passed without a response from my date, so I sent another text asking if he could come quickly, as I was being quite bothered by the persistent stranger next to me.
After another quarter of an hour had passed, I decided to throw in the towel. My date wasn't showing up, and the man next to me was angling for a mega reprimand from my side. Once back in the car, I decided to investigate. Our chat was still eerily silent, but what surprised me even more was his dating profile: it had disappeared.
Dazed, I drove home and now I have so many questions. Had he seen me come in and found me so unattractive that he left immediately? Did he even show up at all? Or was my date a catfish, and was the man next to me, who wanted to be so close to me, the man I had arranged to meet? I have no room to find that out. I found it such a vague story that I immediately blocked him everywhere, and I'm glad I've never heard from him again. I've learned my lesson and will only go on FaceTime dates from now on before I start the real work.
