From 2025 a direct train from Amsterdam to Copenhagen

A city trip becomes a lot more fun for me if you can go by train. You don't have to worry about liquids, you don't have to be there hours in advance, no customs to go through, no: just comfortably with your suitcase on the train, a book or music and a little looking outside. I find that so delightful and intensely relaxing. I also (like many others) hate transferring, because that disrupts that peace enormously. Well, good news: from 2025 we won't have to transfer anymore on our way to Copenhagen.

The Danish Railways (DSB) are currently working on a direct train from Amsterdam to their capital. According to the director, it should be ready by mid-December 2025, although he emphasizes that it is not yet fully definitive. But that's not all, because Copenhagen is not the only city on their radar: they also want direct trains to other European cities like Oslo, Berlin, and Prague. In other words: a Eurotrip will become very easy and fun.

Especially if you have a little more patience, because from 2029 there will also be a new connection, namely the Fehmarnbelt connection. This is a tunnel between Puttgarden in Germany and Rødbyhavn in Denmark and ensures that you can travel from Copenhagen to Hamburg in 2.5 hours, instead of the 4.5 hours it currently takes.

Well, that all takes a little while, but this is a very nice prospect. So plan that weekend in Copenhagen in advance and make sure you have enough books or podcasts ready by then, because the trip will take about 9.5 hours — and that's an hour shorter than the 10.5 hours it currently takes with two transfers.
