The worst movie of all time is coming to Netflix soon

Film Cats is coming to Netflix

So you thought 365 DNI was the worst movie ever? Then you probably have never seen Cats. That might also have everything to do with expectation management; with such a star-studded cast, no one really expected something so bad to come out. Judi Dench, Jennifer Hudson, Idris Elba, Rebel Wilson, Ian McKellen, and Taylor Swift are just a few of the A-list stars featured in the film.

Cats is a musical composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber (who also composed musicals like Evita and Phantom of the Opera), which premiered in 1981 in the West End, London. The story is — quite obviously — about a group of cats called the Jellicles. The story is based on the poems from Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, by T.S. Eliot. Cats is praised for its insane numbers and dance scenes, which come to life very well on stage.

And there was indeed the apprehension when this film was announced: how on earth can you translate this into a movie, let alone a good movie? The day the film Cats premiered, it quickly became clear that this was indeed not possible. By now, the big stars don’t really want to talk about it anymore, and the film was even adjusted after the premiere because Judi Dench's cat paws were forgotten in the CGI, and that just couldn't happen. That I would ever see Dame Judi Dench purring like a cat... I’m still recovering from that.

It also came as no surprise to anyone that Cats set a record at the Golden Raspberry Awards, also known as the Razzies. These awards are given out every year for the worst films, and Cats ‘won’ the award for worst film, worst script, worst duo, worst director, worst supporting actor (James Corden), and worst supporting actress (Rebel Wilson). So six in total. New record.

But the good news is that we can experience this ourselves soon, because starting March 30, it will be on Netflix. Plan that movie night and prepare for an evening full of complaints and looks of disbelief. Is this movie really that bad? You can hardly imagine it, but just wait. It’s even worse.
