You will no longer be allowed to have these animals as pets starting in 2024

In my younger years, I was incredibly good with names; I had two Russian dwarf hamsters named Sapphire and Saffira. Brilliant, if I may say so myself. And incredibly cute animals, which unfortunately do not live very long, and that was of course terrible for my young heart at the time. But well, I believe they had a nice life because I had a particularly large cage for them, including all sorts of slides, tunnels, and different wheels.
If you also find those Russian dwarf hamsters so cute, you need to act quickly if you want to have one at home; starting in 2024, you will no longer be allowed to keep them as pets. A kangaroo will also no longer be allowed, by the way. Yes, seriously: that is still allowed now. So if you really want a meerkat as a pet, you should do that quickly; you are allowed to keep them if you acquired the animal before 2024.
Starting next year, there will be a positive list, a list of ‘approved’ animals that you may keep as pets. For now, there is only a positive list of mammals, so there is (not yet) one for birds, reptiles, fish, and amphibians.
